Corruption is not the root cause of poverty

The slogan of a Filipino political party goes like this: “kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap.” (If there is no corruption, there is no poverty). In a real sense this is true, but this slogan only identifies two results, and does not bring the main cause to the surface.

Corruption is not a problem of the government only, but corruption is a problem of the human heart. Poverty is not caused by political corruption, because political corruption only springs out from the spiritual illness that holds humanity in bondage. I have seen that the one of the most powerful books ever written is The Poverty of Nations: A Sustainable Solution by Wayne Grudem and Barry Asmus. I recommend any Christian, whether inclined to Economics or not, to buy it.

Corruption and low morality are both the results of man’s unregenerate sinful nature. Men’s heart remains bound by the shackles of evil and unbelief, until he is set free, until truth sets him free. “The truth shall set you free.”

The problem is not “up there” in the high offices, but  “within here” man’s soul. The problem is not “them” but “me.”

One of the most comprehensive books every written on this issue is of David Landes. I recommend anyone to grab a copy of his “prime work” which is The Wealth and Poverty of Nations: Why Some Are So Rich and Some So Poor He provides analysis to different factors and gives views to them.

The main problem is not political or strategical, but spiritual. All dysfunctionality within a person, family or a nation has no other root cause but spiritual corruption. Name it, it is Sin. Its Wages is death. All its directions lead to death. All aspects of life- physical, financial, political, familial, marital- suffer from corruption because they are just the effects of the corruption of the human heart. It all stems out from sin.

“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.” Matthew 15:19

Corruption is not the root cause of poverty, but a fruit of man’s depravity. It is not the main problem, it is just the by-product.

People, both in private and public offices, would keep on abusing resources entrusted to them, children will keep on disobeying, young people will keep on loving darkness, man will keep on remaining in his beloved serpent if his heart- the main cause- remains unchanged. Unless you be born again, you remain blind. (John 3:3)
