When we say God is sovereign, it means that He is in control. He rules, He reigns, and He establishes His dominion and authority. He does what He wants without limitations. He is God and He is Lord.
When man hears about God being sovereign, his mind is inclined to have the conception that this is a dangerous doctrine that leads to laziness. Natural reasoning would tell the brain that “since God controls everything, why strive? Why work? Why do something? Be lazy. Since God is in control, then, I will lay back and do nothing!”
Actually, I say that it is the opposite. The fact is, when God is totally Sovereign in your life, you are in the total opposite of laziness. You should be the opposite of darkness, indifference, laziness and fatalism. If God is not our sovereign Lord of all, He is not our Lord at all. Of all the negative misconceptions to God’s sovereignty, the people who has genuine Lordship of Christ in their lives are in fact the total positive. When God is the One who controls your life, it is the total opposite of the life where He is not the Lord. Righteousness and godliness rules the heart. As Christ is King in his life, his character is different than the world. His love and passions cling to that which is good.
Sovereignty means that someone reigns over a territory. That someone is a master of a certain slave. For a regenerate man, he has no other master but Christ Himself. Christ is the sovereign leader and controller of his life. A child of God can no longer agree with William Henley’s Invictus‘ “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” Christ is now the captain of my soul. Christ is now the president, the CEO, the COO, the Chief, the Commander. I obey before I complain. In fact, I cannot stop myself from obeying Him because even my feelings, my heart, my emotions, my mind and ultimately, my actions, were totally changed by Him. He gave me the heart, the feelings, the drive, the thirst, the passion, the zeal. He gave me everything because He is everything. (Ezekiel 36:24-26) It’s like I am born again into a new dimension (John 3:3).
A man who has Christ as his sovereign ruler is never the same again. Before a man is saved, who is the controller of his life? Self, Sin and Satan are one with him. When a man is not saved, the sovereign ruler of his life is sin. As an unsaved, no matter how he may appear as religious, successful and active outside, he is rotten inside. Sin controls the very core of his being. Heart of stone keeps on rejecting and hardening from accepting the seed of Life.
When a man is saved, the king on the throne is replaced by the King of Kings. His sovereign ruler now is Christ. He has a new Lord, a new Master. Paul and Silas themselves said, “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Take note of the “Lord” there, and that’s not simple. In fact, it is humanly impossible. To believe is beyond what man can do. For faith is a supernatural grace. Paul in Romans also exclaimed, “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord…” There again the word “Lord” appears.
He is no longer “dead in trespasses of sins” but is now “made alive with Christ.” (Ephesians 2:1 & 5). The curse of death to the First Adam is now removed from him and the words “you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17) are forever dispelled. He is no longer dead, no longer unresponsive but now alive forevermore. His king is now the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
