The beauty of contrast

Different levels of contrast - original image ...

One important element of beauty is contrast. Without it, there will be no emphasis. Without emphasis, there will be no message. Without message, everything is void of meaning.

In painting, use contrast to emerge an idea. In writing, use the word “but” to establish a contrasting twist. In penmanship, use a black ink over a white paper to make a word clear.

When there’s a clear message, we use contrast. In fact, the higher the contrast, the higher the difference. In photography, the right amount of contrast produces a clearer message that is wanted to be conveyed.

Without contrast, we will never appreciate the stars. Stars are not appreciated if there is no darkness. Expensive colorful fireworks are a waste of money if it is not flared up at night time.

Lights shine the brightest when the night is the darkest. In the blackness of the night, there could still exist as something good if that something delivers light.

The same way, God’s beauty is emphasized over a background that is ugly. We will never appreciate His goodness if we never see our darkness, our evil. We will never appreciate God’s love if we don’t see God’s hatred for sin. The more we see our blackness, the more we appreciate His light, His goodness, His beauty.

Just like a hero who becomes a hero because there’s somebody who is a villain. No story applauded a protagonist, without somebody who was an antagonist. That “wicked foe” may be a conflict against another person, against nature or against himself.

In the story of real life, Jesus is the Light, Jesus is the superhero, Jesus is the protagonist. In the Book which contains the story of the universe, history is His Story.

He is the highlight that gives beautiful contrast to our darkness. He alone deserves to be exalted, to be applauded, to be glorified- and no other. This is not all about us, this is all about Him. “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” Romans 11:36
