Text: Genesis Chapter 13
After leaving Egypt, Abraham and Lot became very rich. The land “could no longer support them because their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.” To stop the quarreling between their servants, Abraham gave Lot a choice. “If you go to the left, I will go to the right. If you go to the right, I will go to the left.” (v.9)
So Lot looked around and chose the land that was “well watered.. just like the Garden of the Lord.” Lot thought he was wise on his own. The basis of Lot’s choice was “external evidences of money and pleasure.” He was lured by the comfortable and lush real estates. The land Lot chose was Sodom- a good land, but a land of poor company. He thought that the ultimate capital is productive land but he did not follow God’s principle that true wealth are people under the Lordship of God’s laws. “Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.” (v.19) Sodom was rich, but it was filthy rich.
Although Lot was a righteous man (2 Peter 2:7), his wicked surroundings soon find its way inside his heart. After some time dwelling in the land of the wealthy Sodom, He soon surrounded himself with evil men, and later, corrupt men surrounded him. He chose to live with the wealthy wicked, than suffer temporarily in the desert with the righteous. He was the opposite of Moses who “chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.”
At the end, God brought judgment to that “rich” and “wealthy” place because not even ten righteous people are present there.(18:32). Sodom and all its wealth were all destroyed. Presently, it is now the place called Dead Sea. Not even a single fish can live in its waters. Lot’s decision was shortsighted, it was a tragedy. He built on shaky sand. He went to Sodom rich, and he went out poor and no future. “Lot wasted a lot.” He escaped from the righteous and joyful life with God but then lost all his family and possessions.
When Lot escaped from Sodom, his wife looked back and became a statue of salt. He and his daughters escaped and lived in Mt. Zoar. The two daughters made their father drunk. They became pregnant by their father. Their children became the nation of Ammonites and Moabites, two nations that were cursed and short-lived.
Lot’s decision led to tragedy- to him, to his family and to his descendants up to the tenth generation. Choosing wealth in wickedness brought temporary pleasures, but it was the worst decision. Believing and staying in Christ is the sure way to satisfying life. Abraham chose to live in obeying the laws of God. The desert he lived has soon become the Land flowing with milk and honey.
