When your world is falling apart

A short yet powerful idea I got hold from a pastor’s sermon is his comparison of our life to the solar system.

The sun is the center of all the solar bodies and the cause of planetary movements that bring everything in order. Because of the sun’s gravitational pull, we don’t bang against Venus or Mars, nor Mercury is sucked up by the sun’s powerful pull. The Sun brings order and life.

This is the very case with our minds. In Romans 1:21-32, Paul explicitly addresses the root cause of all the disorders in our life: “for although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”

The following verses then enumerates the results of such rejection of True God: idolatry, lust, homosexuality, lesbianism, envy, indifference, murder, wickedness, disobedience to parents and death. It is interesting to see that man’s wickedness stems out from the mind, in which the mind dethrones God as the central governing Entity. Thoughts then lead to beliefs and beliefs to actions.

As we see these works of darkness in our hearts, we begin to realize that it all starts in our imaginations, when we “exchange God to a lie” v.25, we tell ourselves that God is boring and a life of sin makes us happier.

Many books or seminars out there would try to give us steps or tips on how to solve these unending list of man’s ancient problems, but here in Romans, the very answer is given in such a great economy of words. It identifies the main problem: “because even when they knew God, they do not honor Him as God” v.21

When God is not at the center of the system of our souls, mind, and hearts, the result is chaos. Instead of order, there’s disorder. Instead of functionality, there will be dysfunctional effects. Instead of doing right, we commit wrong.

What then would heal the brokenness of our lives and bring our world back to order again? Repent. To turn to God as the Ultimate Central God of our lives and as the true and ultimate Source of our joy and satisfaction. It is to find the Living Water that can quench your thirsty soul and to helplessly drink from it which alone can sustain your spiritual life.

We tend to deflect our joys and happiness to things of the world like entertainment, idols, food, humans or other creatures, yet these could not even permeate the very surface of the true joys the Lord is giving. For “in His presence is fullness of joy, in his right hand are pleasure forevermore.” Psalm 16:11
