“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
The Owner of heaven Himself has spoken that His kingdom belongs to those who see their spiritual poverty. How is it to be poor in spirit? What is this kind of qualification? Who shall enter the kingdom of God?
To be poor is to have the sense of the true condition of your soul. Those who will enter His Kingdom are only those who see themselves as destitute and impoverished towards their spiritual standing before God and they cry out for their undeserved rescue.
They are those who see their spiritual poverty. They received this sense of their own helplessness, wickedness and rebellion. They are the ones who have the eyes to see how miserable they are. They realize how wretched is their standing.
When they look at their life, they can see nothing except the fact they are dirty. They punch their chest as they remember their past. The poor in spirit are sinners who stand before God’s presence and cannot look up to Him because they know how unworthy they are. They are humbled by their shame, contrite and broken by their own conscience.
The only qualified people to enter God’s kingdom are sinners who see their total inability to earn God’s favor, and cry out to the Savior and Redeemer of their soul. They see their bankruptness. They are beggars of mercy, paupers of hope, and pleaders for grace. The word for poor here refers to the condition of so much poverty that forced them to beg. They no longer have the ability to work enough to support their food that they necessarily have to spread their palms and beg for alms. This is the type of person who will enter God’s presence. Those who beg before God. Those who see they are so poor spiritually, and in dire need of His saving Grace.
The opposite of this is Spiritual-pride. People who stand confident in themselves before God for their salvation, that they add their self-deeds or self-righteousness to the work of Christ and expect to earn the favor of God for their works. They don’t see their “righteousness as filthy rags” but they stand proud of their own self. They look down to others and say, “Lord, I am not like that person – a sinner.” These people are the opposite of poor in spirit, wherein they are blind, they cannot see that they also are so poor. Then, they get their prize- they are not rescued.
